Folding @Home – A distributed computing project
As most of the public places in the world have been shut down, people who are working from home can donate their household’s unused computing power for simulating processes. It is a distributed computing project for simulating protein dynamics, including the process of protein folding and the movements of protein implicated in a variety of diseases. The main goal of this project is to model the structure of 2019-nCoV spike protein to identify the sites that can be targeted by a therapeutic antibody. Basically, it is based on understanding the interaction between the viral spike protein and ACE-2 to prevent the virus from infecting to lung cells. As the proteins can fold and unfold into a huge number of shapes the researchers need high-performance computing power to model complex structural data. The cumulative power of home computers becomes a great support for the global research on Coronavirus.

With the support of Chinese medical institutions, Alibaba’s DAMO Academy, the group’s global research program commenced developing an AI system that can expedite diagnosis and analysis of the virus. AI-based drug discovery pipeline is based on producing molecular structures as part of the widening fight against the COVID-19 outbreak. A disease surveillance analytic program is developed by BlueDot, Digital Health Company, using machine learning and natural language processing techniques to analyse different type of data such as news reports, airline ticketing data and infectious diseases data to predict the spreading pattern within a selected region.
