Today, on Wednesday, 14th of March,2018 the world of Science is deeply saddened by the sudden, unexpected departure of Dr. Stephan Hawking : the man who was considered as the modern day Albert Einstein. He was a famous theoretical physicist best known for his international best seller, ”A Brief History of Time” and his great contribution towards the scientists’ understanding of black holes and cosmology.
Professor Stephen William Hawking was born on 8th January 1942 in Oxford, England. He died at the age of 76.Even as a child, he showed great enthusiasm towards Science. At school he was nick named “Einstein” by his class mates. He graduated for University of Oxford with a first class honours degree in natural science. After graduation, in October 1962, he started doing research in cosmology at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) at the University of Cambridge. The tragic which he later fought in to a miracle occurred a year after that, he was diagnosed with a motor neuro disease. He was 21 at that time and the doctors gave him only two more years to live.
It is often truth that the people who have the shortest time to live enjoy the life more than the rest of us. This was indeed truth for Dr.Stephan Hawkings’ life, he had so many things to do in such a little time and this motivated him. The illness bounded him to wheel chair, he had to depend on computerized voice system for communication but he never gave up. He said , he started to enjoy the present life more than ever and began making progress with his research. He continued to research about theoretical physics, used to travel a lot and give public speeches. Dr. Hawking became renowned for his work including Hawking radiation (it states black holes emit radiation that can be detected),Penrose-Howking theorms (they explains why gravitation produces singularities) etc. Literary, with his discoveries ,he just changed the way we think about the entire universe. The way he over came the odds is a story that inspired many. The Universe in a Nutshell, Black Holes and Baby Universes and Other Essays, My Brief History and The Grand Design are few of his most popular publications.
Dr. Stephan Hawkings was the Lucasian professor at Mathematics at University of Cambridge from 1977 to 2009.It was a position formally held by Issac Newton himself. Throughout his life he won 13 honorary degrees. He won CBE (1982), Companion of Honour (1989) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2009). The Fundamental Physics prize (2013), Copley Medal (2006) and the Wolf Foundation prize (1988) are the most valuable prizes and medals he has won.
Furthermore, Dr. Stephan Hawkings was also a pop culture icon with cameon in shows including the simpsons, star treak and Big Bang Theory. This was mostly due to his wheel chair. Theory of Everything (2014) ,Hawking(2013) documentary by Stephen Finnigan are the most famous movies based on his life. With everything he has done, the world will never forget the legacy of Dr. Stephan Hawkings-the modern day Albert Einstein.
