Since Wednesday (05/06/2020) evening, iOS users have been reporting crash reports that a number of popular apps are crashing, including Spotify, GroupMe, Pinterest and TikTok.
According to a GitHub thread, it is reported that this was caused by a problem with Facebook’s SDK.
The Downdetector website reports that from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm (PT Time), users of these services around the world have received tens of thousands of crash reports, and many popular apps have crashed. They also point out that as soon as these apps are launched, the app will be close.
The most popular apps of this nature are the ones that try to connect with Facebook servers when they open, often using the Facebook SDK to share information about displaying ads, even if you’re using another app. This means that you are paying close attention to what you were doing at the time.
Guilherme Rambo, a software engineer and spokesperson for 9to5mac, says that Facebook is working to fix this issue as quickly as possible, but it will take some time.
His below tweets summarize the situation, and Rambo also gives a suggestion about what Apple might do to avoid anything similar from happening in the future.
In an announcement to The Verge, Facebook said that it had released an update to the Facebook iOS SDK that caused the crash of the iOS apps it was using. That they acted.
